Goin' To The Lake Recap: Perham (Day 2)

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Summer is coming to an end, and so are the WCCO summer road trips to the lakes! Our final stop on our tour across Minnesota is in Perham, a three-hour drive northwest of the cities.

Liz Collin and Mike Binkley went to the Perham Lakeside Golf Club Friday. It is a beautiful facility with 27 holes to play. They have had great weather all summer, and Friday was no exception.

Golf is always a big draw for a lot of people who vacation in Minnesota, and Perham Lakeside is one of the premiere courses in the area. And if you're not golfing, you can still stop in for food and drinks at the clubhouse. They even were hosting a wedding when the WCCO team was there.

Perham will hold its 45th annual Pioneer Fest Saturday, which is a great event for the whole family. You can check out things like a settler's cabin from the late 1800s. And there is even an antique tractor pull. They hook the old machines up to heavy weights and see how far they can go.

The Pioneer Festival is free during the day, although they would love a donation. The dance at night costs $5.

Liz and Mike had a great time fly fishing Thursday night with guide Doug Harthan from Front 20 Outfitters. If he can get two beginners to catch that many fish, he can do anything.

And in the video below, you'll see that he almost served as bait for Liz during her first cast!

The Black Powder Rendezvous is going on all weekend in Perham. It's put on by the local group Lake Country Mountaineers. They spend the weekend dressed in pre-1840 gear, and using only authentic tools and weapons. Some kids showed off their work throwing hatchets and knives, then a bow and arrow.

The rendezvous is right next to the grounds of the Pioneer Festival going on Saturday. Anyone can walk over and check it out for free.

WCCO goes to the lakes all summer long to get out and enjoy everything Minnesota has to offer. And that is basically the philosophy a local teenager has used to start her own business.

Elle Chase of Chase Crew Paddle Board Rental is just 17. She met Liz and Mike at the lake Friday to try a little paddle boarding. You can go and say "hi" to Elle at the Minnesota State Fair next week. She will be on Machinery Hill for the whole fair. Oh, and part of her earnings go to a charity for clean water!
