State Senator Seen As Congressional Contender Bypasses Race

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — State Sen. Dave Thompson has ruled out a run for Congress in Minnesota's 2nd congressional district, taking a candidate viewed as a GOP contender out of the mix.

Thompson announced Friday that he won't seek to succeed Republican Rep. John Kline in the competitive district south of the Twin Cities. He tells The Associated Press, "I'm not sure I want the job. I don't think it is the right thing for me at this time."

Thompson ran for governor in 2014 and had been mentioned as a potential congressional candidate. He says his outside work as an attorney for Renter's Warehouse is keeping him too busy to run.

Several other Republicans are weighing campaigns. Two Democrats, Mary Lawrence and Angie Craig, are announced candidates and others could join.
