4 Games In, Vikings A Mixed Bag At 2-2

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (WCCO) -- If you blinked you might have missed it -- the NFL's regular season is already one-fourth over with. And it's a good time for coach Mike Zimmer to assess where his team stands and where it's headed.

"I like this football team. I think they work real hard. We have to get better, there's no question," Zimmer said. "But I'm not happy with where we're at, no. I think we have a chance to be a good football team, and if we ever do put it all together, we can be a really good football team. But that's a lot of ifs."

The Vikings head into their bye this week at 2-2, which is fitting because this season so far has been a mixed bag -- a little good, a little bad. And as the Vikings pass the quarter pole and head into their bye week, Zimmer has mixed feelings about what he's seen.

"I think some things I feel pretty good about," he said. "And then there's some things that I feel like, we need to figure this out a little bit better."

Near the top of Mike Zimmer's list of concerns has to be his team's inability so far to match quality opponents' level of competition. Sunday's loss in Denver dropped the Vikings to 0-7 under Zimmer against teams with a winning record. And he thinks he knows why that is.

"Sometimes with this team, it seems like when we get in big games, everyone wants to make a play. Instead of just, 'Hey look here, this is my job, I'm going to do my job, I'm going to do this.' So it's just something that I'm going to have to continue to figure out," Zimmer said. "I think every time we get in these situations and we're able to teach and we're able to coach, and we're able to fight back like we did in that ballgame, I think these are all great learning experiences with a young football team. And at some point in time, we're going to get over the hump."
