Bringing Art Deco Back: The Commodore To Reopen After 30 Years

ST. PAUL (WCCO) -- A classic St. Paul bar will soon open its doors again, bringing visitors back to the time of F. Scott Fitzgerald and the roaring '20s.

The Commodore on Cathedral Hill in St. Paul is coming back to life.

The apartment hotel was built in 1920, but has been closed to the public for the last 30 years.

"When the bar opened, it became the most famous of the art deco bars in this part of the country for decades," owner John Rupp said.

The Commodore closed after a gas fire explosion in the 1970s.

Amazingly, none of the mirrors in the bar were broken.

Rupp and his wife, Stephanie, say they are thrilled to revive the classic bar and restaurant.
