Boy, 17, Arrested For Online Threat Against School In Cottonwood Co.

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – A 17-year-old boy was arrested Monday after he allegedly posted a threat against Fairmont schools Monday, according to the Fairmont Police Department.

KEYC reported the teen was arrested around 6:30 p.m. Monday.

Authorities believe the threat was posted from the Cottonwood County area but that the suspect has ties to the Fairmont area.

In response to the threat, Fairmont schools put extra security in place Monday.

According to the KEYC report, the threat was posted using Yik Yak, an anonymous Internet application.

The post was found by officials Saturday morning.

The Fairmont Police Department worked with Fairmont schools tighten security, including having seven police officers stationed at the high school and elementary.

The post, which was a single line, has been described by school officials as being "non-specific."

"A teacher notified us on Saturday. It has no mention of Fairmont, any specific school. It was simply one sentence it said, 'Guess who's gonna Columbine school on Monday,'" Superintendent Joseph Brown Sr. said in the KEYC report.

The suspect is currently in custody and is awaiting formal charges.
