Investigation Continues Into Officer-Involved Fatal Shooting In Hutchinson

HUTCHINSON, Minn. (WCCO) -- More information is emerging about the man who was shot and killed over the weekend after a struggle with Hutchinson police.

A neighbor living in the same duplex as the suspect says he called police at the suspect's request around 4 p.m. Sunday.

After what police described as a struggle, the suspect was shot and killed.

One officer suffered an injury to his leg, but he has since been released from the hospital.

Authorities haven't named either the suspect or the officers involved in the shooting.

By the accounts of neighbors living near the duplex on the 500 block of Harmony Lane, the suspect was a nice 50-year-old man who lived alone.

They say they were concerned about his behavior Sunday, but had hoped things would end peacefully.

Leroy Lofgren and his wife, Christine, live across the street from the duplex.

They say around 4 p.m., police knocked on their door and told them to stay inside.

The Lofgrens say they watched from their window as the suspect came to the doorway of the home, dropped an unknown object outside, then walked back into the house and officers followed.

"As the shots were fired, then a cop came running through our yard," Christine Lofgren said.

The Hutchinson police chief would only say a struggle happened and shots were fired, leaving one man dead and one of the 22 officers on the Hutchinson police force hurt.

The chief said his main focus following the shooting is investigating what happened and making sure his officers are healthy.

The Bureau Criminal Apprehension is conducting interviews before releasing the names of the officers involved.

The identity of the suspect will be released by the medical examiner's office.
