Dozens Of Hounds Surrendered To Humane Society

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Fifty-three northern Minnesota hound dogs are getting a chance at a better life.

The dogs were surrendered to the Golden Valley Animal Humane Society a few weeks ago. Staffers there say a man had the dogs for years. He never got them fixed, so they kept reproducing.

Dr. Graham Brayshaw is helping take care of the pups.

"We're guessing some of the breeds we think are blood hounds," Brayshaw said.

Roy, a 9-year-old brindle, is just one of the more than four dozen hounds. Most of the dogs are from 1 to 4 years old. And several are ready for new homes.

"The owner definitely cared for them," Brayshaw said. "Just by sheer number of animals got beyond his means to be able to take care of them, to adequately give them the care they need."

So now the Animal Humane Society is taking care of them.

"The ideal home for dogs like this are people who are willing to be a little more patient," Brayshaw said. "These aren't your perfect, adaptable little puppy that's going to come in and just mesh perfectly in your house, whatever situation you have."

Because the dogs were living spread out on open land with little human contact, he says they will need some extra TLC. Brayshaw says in just a few weeks, they have come a long way. About 20 of them are socialized enough, and ready to be placed.

"I definitely think there's homes out there for all these guys," he said.

Of the 53 dogs, two are puppies, and the oldest is 15. Click here for more information on adoption.
