Woman Killed In Iron Range Apartment Fire

MOUNTAIN IRON, Minn. (AP) — One person is dead after an apartment fire on northern Minnesota's Iron Range.

The fire was reported just before 6:30 a.m. Saturday at an apartment building in Mountain Iron.

The St. Louis County Sheriff's Office says smoke from an apartment was reported on the third floor, and the apartment door felt hot. Law enforcement arrived and began evacuating the building, but could not get past the smoke on the second floor.

Firefighters arrived and completed the evacuation of two buildings. A person was pronounced dead in an apartment. The sheriff's office identifies the victim as 25-year-old Shavondria Owens.

Occupants of 24 apartments have been displaced, and the American Red Cross is helping them. Investigators have not found anything suspicious. The state fire marshal's office is assisting in the investigation.
