Potential MPS Superintendent Answers Questions On Abuse Allegations

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – The man being considered for Superintendent of Minneapolis Public Schools is visiting this week.

Dr. Sergio Paez is here to answer questions about the abuse allegations in his former district.

Paez comes from Holyoke Public Schools in Massachusetts, where the district is investigating abuse allegations involving the treatment of special education students.

On Tuesday night, Paez answered questions from parents at the Avenue Eatery.

"I have to face the facts. I have to be able to speak clearly and loudly about what is happening. And I'm here for that reason. I'm hoping I have the chance to talk to parents who came in to talk to me," Paez said.

As Paez answered questions, a different group gathered at North Regional Library.

This was a group of parents from multiple backgrounds talking about the process the district is using to search for a new superintendent.

One woman said she thinks Paez should be given a chance, but the district shouldn't be afraid of going a different direction if need be.

"I think a lot of people in the community are of the opinion that the board shouldn't be afraid to re-start the search if that seems like the right thing. That the most important part now is getting someone who really feels like a great fit for Minneapolis and not settling," Sarah Lahm said.

The decision to continue with Paez or restart the search will be made next Tuesday.
