Lake Harriet Kite Festival Canceled

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Minnesota's record-breaking warmth in December continues to impact winter activities.

On Thursday, the Minneapolis Parks & Recreation Department cancelled the 15th annual Lake Harriet Kite Festival, which was scheduled for Jan. 16.

Even with the upcoming cold weather, Minneapolis officials say ice conditions will not be safe in time.

"Unfortunately Mother Nature has spoken and we will not be able to see all those beautiful kites flying high over the lake. Hopefully next year we will have better luck," one of the sponsors, East Harriet Farmstead Neighborhood Association, said.

It was decided previously that there wouldn't be a backup date if the event was canceled.
