Drunk Driving Suspected In Fatal Highway 12 Crash

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) –A Minnesota mother of three is dead after a fatal car accident in Delano.

It happened on Highway 12 at Ebersole Avenue around 10:45 p.m. Wednesday. Authorities say Michael Steer, 24, was driving in the eastbound lane when he went into oncoming traffic, hitting another vehicle head-on.

The State Patrol says he had been drinking prior to the crash.

Mayla Macon, 40, was a passenger in the vehicle that was hit. She died at the scene.

Family members said Macon was carpooling home with a friend at the time of the crash.

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims of this crash, and nobody should have to go through what they're going through," West Hennepin Public Safety chief Gary Kroells said.

Highway 12 has been a problem for authorities as they work to bring down the number of fatal accidents. Between 2010 and 2014, there were 811 crashes on the highway that left 16 people dead.

The Highway 12 Safety Coalition announced efforts last month to challenge drivers to go twelve months without a fatal crash. They increased patrols and are assessing intersections to potentially add stoplights or roundabouts.

The driver of the vehicle Macon was in was taken to North Memorial Medical Center, where he is in critical condition.

How You Can Help

Macon's parents are in the Philippines, and the family is asking for help in purchasing airfare to have them in Minnesota for the funeral. Help with service expenses is also needed.

If you'd like to help, you can donate to the family's GoFundMe page.
