Outdoor Curling Club Creates Bond Among Lake Neighbors

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- In Minnesota, hockey rinks on ponds and lakes are common.

But one family looked at the ice on their lake and decided to create something that's easy for everyone to play. Mike Max paid a visit.

On a near perfect winter day, on a near perfect lake, they play the sport they love. It's curling. You see, Stu Roberston looked at his shore line and said "let's do something different."

He did, and it's becoming a popular past time.

"It's a sport that everybody can do and you can take it seriously or not and have a lot of fun," Outdoor Curling Founder Stu Robertson said.

It is a sport simple in its premise.

"What's the key to the technique? Not falling," Outdoor Curling Clinician Tom Opheim said.

The real key to curling is going for it. You can't leave something short, ever. It's just like putting in golf. It's a little more difficult than it looks, but that's not what this is about.

"It's something fun to be outside on the lake in the winter time, no pressure, just for fun," Robertson said.

And that is the bottom line. They built it, and they're building a neighborhood bond because of it.

"You turn the lights on and you start curling and pretty soon people start walking down out of their house. Everybody is welcome," neighbor Todd Porter said.
