Blizzard Warnings Issued, Schools Cancel Ahead Of Snowstorm

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO/AP) — After an almost spring-like weekend in the Twin Cities, weather conditions are about to get interesting.

Forecasters say Rochester, Albert Lea and other cities in that region will likely get hit with up to a foot of snow and blizzard-like conditions. The National Weather Service has issued blizzard warnings and watches for most of the southern portion of the state, and winter storm warnings and watches for areas stretching from the Twin Cities down toward Rochester and Winona.

Public schools in Rochester and Austin already have announced they will be closed Tuesday.

The National Weather Service expects low visibility and large snowdrifts beginning Tuesday. The weather service's blizzard watch says some roads may be impassable on Tuesday night.

WCCO meteorologist Matt Brickman says south-central and southeastern Minnesota could see 6 to 10 inches of snow while the Twin Cities could see 3 to 6 inches by the time the storm exits the state.

"We'll also see strong winds along with snow in the metro for the Tuesday evening commute," Brickman said. "I'd expect a very slow and slippery drive home Tuesday night -- and while we won't get whiteout conditions in the metro, visibility will still be greatly reduced."

The storm shouldn't affect the morning commute in the Twin Cities, Brickman said, but will start to make its way in from the south by midday.
