Police: St. Paul Man Busted In Oregon With 113 Pounds Of Marijuana

Update: The charges against David Huckaby were dropped after a judge ruled that officers did not have the necessary probable cause to search his car.

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Troopers say they arrested a Twin Cities musician after discovering about a quarter-million dollars worth of marijuana in his trunk.

The Oregon State Police pulled David Huckaby over for speeding near the small town of Bly at about 12:15 p.m. last Friday. Troopers say they found 113 pounds of marijuana when they searched his car.

"There was evidence that led the officers to discover just a huge amount of marijuana," Klamath County District Attorney Rob Patridge said.

Huckaby is an accomplished cellist. He received a Master's Degree from the prestigious Juilliard School, and the 33-year-old performed with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra for four seasons. He is now in an Oregon jail.

"It's disconcerting to have somebody out of state with that much money in marijuana," Patridge said.

Recreational marijuana use is legal in Oregon. But the amount troopers say they found on Huckaby has him facing charges for distribution. The Klamath County District Attorney says rural Oregon has seen an increase in cases like this.

"People who are buying large amounts of weed and going high levels of speed are likely to get caught. We've had a lot of mules coming through rural Oregon, whether it be meth or marijuana, and they're coming through and they're making mistakes on their, on speeding and our officers know what to look for," Patridge said.

The marijuana is valued at around $226,000. The investigation is ongoing.

A former neighbor, who didn't want to be on camera, called the arrest devastating. And he said the behavior seems completely out of character for Huckaby.

Huckaby will go before a judge on Tuesday. Patridge said they will look at his criminal history to determine if he'll be given bond, since he has no known ties to Oregon.
