Police: Man Arrested In St. Paul Robbery, Assault Of 76-Year-Old

ST. PAUL, Minn. (WCCO) -- A 31-year-old St. Paul man is accused of assaulting a 76-year-old man before taking his coat, wallet and cell phone after the victim gave him a ride from a gas station, according to charges filed in Ramsey County Court.

Daulon Ivra Sampson was charged with first-degree aggravated robbery in connection with the incident, which happened last Thursday night.

The incident started at about 10:30 p.m. as Sampson was spotted on video surveillance stealing a beverage from a gas station on University Avenue and Chatsworth Street. The suspect then asked the victim for a ride, saying he was new to the area and didn't have any money.

Police say Sampson told the man to drive a few blocks away to the intersection of LaFond Avenue and Milton Street. When the vehicle stopped, the Sampson lured the man out of the car by telling him his door was stuck and not opening.

The victim got out and went to the passenger side to open the door on the suspect's side, and the victim was attacked from behind. He was knocked down before the suspect took his coat, wallet and cell phone. He left the victim lying in front of the vehicle with a broken leg and wrist, police said. The victim also had cuts on his neck, elbows and under his nose, the complaint states.

The victim was taken to Regions Hospital. Sampson was taken into custody just before 5:30 p.m. Saturday.

The complaint states Sampson denied to police that he robbed the victim. He admitted asking for a ride and that a second man got a ride at the same time. Sampson told police he got out of the car near Pennsylvania Avenue and a second man got into the front seat of the car next to the victim.

Authorities followed up with the victim, who said he did not give a ride to a second person and identified Sampson as the man who robbed him.

Sampson is also linked to a robbery investigation back on Feb. 9.

If convicted, he faces up to 20 years in prison and a $35,000 fine.
