Kevin Dorsey Leaving Gophers Basketball Program

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- Kevin Dorsey, one of three Minnesota guards suspended at the end of the season after a sex video appeared briefly on social media, will transfer to another school.

Dorsey and teammates Nate Mason and Dupree McBrayer were suspended for the final four games of the season after a sex video appeared on Dorsey's Twitter account. They missed the final three games of the regular season and Minnesota's lone game in the Big Ten tournament, putting a dispiriting cap on a season in which the team went 2-16 in the Big Ten.

The school reinstated the players last month and said they would be eligible to return to the team in good standing at the start of next season. Coach Richard Pitino did not refer to the video in his statement explaining the decision, but the salacious headlines generated after the players were suspended may have been difficult to get past had Dorsey remained on campus.

"After discussion with Kevin and his family, we all feel that it is best for him to transfer and get closer to home," Pitino said in a statement issued Monday by the school. "We wish Kevin nothing but the best moving forward, and will assist him in the process in any way that we can."

Dorsey is a Maryland native, and the speedy point guard was a coveted recruit for Pitino in his third season on the job. He was often erratic on the court, but he played more than 18 minutes per game as a freshman, serving as the first guard off the bench.

Had Dorsey returned to school next year, he likely would have been a significant part of the team's quest to turn things around after a disastrous 2015-16 season. His aggressiveness getting to the basket and quickness on defense both figured to be assets for a team that desperately need them.

Mason and McBrayer have not publicly expressed their plans for next season.
