Groups Meet At Capitol To Address Islamophobia

ST. PAUL, Minn. (WCCO) -- At least 12 groups came together at the State Capitol on Tuesday to address people's fears and distrust for Muslims.

The Council on America-Islamic Relations says it's been monitoring Islamophobia-related incidents across Minnesota. They say Islamophobia is when people exhibit hatred and hostility toward Muslims perpetrated by negative stereotypes.

An incident that happened at a Coon Rapids Applebee's last November was mentioned. Police say Asma Jama was attacked by another customer for speaking in Swahili.

They say Jodie Burchard-Rish threw a beer mug across her face, causing Jama to get 17 stitches on her lip. Burchard-Rish was arrested and charged with felony assault.

"I ask all Minnesotans to stand up against all forms of discrimination and in this critical hour to stand against Islamophobia," CAIR Executive Director Jaylani Hussein said.

The group urges political and business leaders to learn more about the Muslim faith and focus on the positive impact they make on the community.
