Dayton Asks Feds For Another Real ID Extension

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Gov. Mark Dayton is asking the Homeland Security Department to accept Minnesota state driver's licenses at federal buildings and military bases.

Minnesota driver's licenses don't meet Real ID requirements.

Earlier this year, the Department of Defense stop accepting licenses from five states - including Minnesota - because they don't meet the Real ID Act. The new licenses have tougher security standards and you'll need one for flights in 2018.

However, the legislature banned the cards over privacy concerns several years ago. Now, lawmakers are now working to implement the ID's.

Minnesotans can still access federal buildings or military bases with an alternate ID, such as a passport.
