Basketball Tournament Held For Slain Aitkin Co. Investigator

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A charity basketball tournament was held Saturday at Henry Sibley High School in honor of an Aitkin County investigator killed in the line of duty.

Steven Sandberg was guarding patient Danny Hammond at St. Cloud Hospital in October, when the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension says Hammond grabbed Sandberg's weapon and shot him.

Sandberg died in the emergency room. Hammond was also killed after a hospital security guard used an electroshock weapon on him.

The "Ballin in Dakota County" basketball tournament was started in 2011 to raise funds for families and agencies of fallen officers.

All the proceeds from Saturday's event will go to Sandberg's family.
