Good Questions: Rainy Day Edition

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Parts of Minnesota saw more than four inches of rain this week. So, we're answering some of your rainy day Good Questions.

Viewers have asked: who decides to call a Twins game because of rain?

Last week, the Twins and Brewers had a more than two-hour rain delay before the game was called.

The Twins tell us if there's heavy rain before a game, they're the ones who make the decision.

The grounds crew and the Twins' meteorologist help with that.

If the game has already started, it's up to the umpires to decide how long the rain delay will be, or if the game needs to be postponed.

Several viewers have asked: why do worms crawl onto sidewalks when it rains?

Not just sidewalks, driveways too. Worms breathe through their skin.

When it rains, worm burrows fill with water and worms can't get enough air so they come to the surface.

Once there, they seem to get confused- possibly because of lights. That leads to the slimy, sad sight that comes with a rain shower.

Wallace from Inver Grove Heights wants to know: why does it rain harder after a lightning strike?

The closer the lightning is, the closer the storm is and with it heavy rainfall.

A strong storm creates a strong downdraft, which produces heavy bursts of rain. In some cases, you can see lightning just before a gush of rain because light travels faster.
