Animal Humane Society A Haven For Abandoned Pets Nationwide

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Volunteers from the Animal Humane Society stopped by the WCCO studios Wednesday to bring awareness to their program and raise money for their organization.

The AHS helps pets find their forever homes. Many of the dogs and cats up for adoption aren't surrendered locally. We learned why the AHS takes in so many transports each month.

"We are fortunate to not have an overpopulation problem in the Twin Cities area," Jen Faehnrich, an animal transfer liaison at the Animal Humane Society, said. "So we have more people looking to adopt than we have animals coming through our shelter from our own community."

Many other cities across the country aren't so lucky, and rely on Minnesota's Animal Humane Society for help.

"Our adoption rate is probably only about 25 percent of our dogs, that we can get adopted out locally," Mitzi Burkahart of the 3 Girls Animal Rescue in Tulsa, Oklahoma said.

The churn of animals at the AHS, and its reputation as a haven for abandonned pets across the country, means they're always in need of help. To find out more about the organization, or to donate, visit wcco.com/accomplishmn.
