Crews Working To Contain 1,000 Acre Wildfire On The Iron Range

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Officials on the eastern Iron Range say a wildfire there is estimated to be about 1,000 acres in size, and crews are working to contain the flames.

Authorities say the fire started Friday just southeast of Hoyt Lakes. The cause of the fire is unknown.

On Saturday, crews were able to contain the fire to minimal growth. On Sunday, they planned to strengthen fire lines, check hot spots and protect structures near Skibo, which is about 15 miles east of Hoyt Lakes.

Several roads near the fire were closed. Some residents were evacuated as a precaution.

The Department of Natural Resources listed fire danger as extreme for the eastern Iron Range on Sunday. The National Weather Service also issued a red flag warning for the area.

The forecast looks to remain dry on Sunday. Winds will be light, making containment easier for fire crews.

Thunderstorms are possible Monday and Tuesday, weather officials say.
