Wheelock Whitney Dies At 89

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Wheelock Whitney, an influential business and civic leader in the Twin Cities, has died. He passed away Friday at the age of 89.

Whitney was CEO of RBC Wealth Management and former mayor of Wayzata. He also had a hand in bringing Major League Baseball and an NHL expansion team to the Twin Cities.

Gov. Mark Dayton and Lt. Gov. Tina Smith released statements on Whitney's passing.

"Wheelock Whitney was an outstanding and influential civic leader throughout his life. He was also a very dear family friend," Dayton's statement read.

"I deeply respected Wheelock Whitney for his great humor, intelligence, and service to our state and country. Archie and I will miss him very much," said Smith.

Whitney will also be remembered for his dedication of his time and money to many nonprofits across the state.

He is survived by his four children and his wife, former State Supreme Court Chief Justice, Kathleen Blatz.
