At 14th State Meet, Rochester Senior Pole Vaulter Beats State Record

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – If Andy Jacobs seemed incredibly relaxed for a person about to launch themselves more than 13 feet into the air during the most important event of the year, there's a pretty good reason for that.

It's hard to find a person more accustomed to being in a state meet than her.

The Rochester Century senior has gone to state in the pole vault, diving, and gymnastics every year since eighth grade.

In total, she's been to state 14 times.

In fact, it would've been 15 if not for taking freshman year off in gymnastics to compete for her club team.

"There's so many people that are willing to help me in all three of the sports," Jacobs said. "There's definitely a lot of long practices, but I totally love that."

Jacobs was fourth on bars, fifth on floor and sixth in the all-around at state gymnastics this year.

She was second in the state diving meet, and a high school All-American.

But pole vault is where she's at her best. She's the top active female high school vaulter in the country.

"When I first started pole vaulting, I had no idea that I'd be able to do any of this," Jacobs said.

And Saturday, she won her fourth straight state title and broke her own state meet record, with a vault of 13 feet, 3 inches.

Of her 14 trips to state, Jacobs said this was her favorite one.

"I was so overjoyed," she said. "I was so happy."

But it was also a little bittersweet. Because this was her last one.

She'll be heading to Nebraska on a pole vaulting scholarship, but her incredible high school career is now complete.

"It's definitely weird to think that this is over," she said. "It's definitely sad."
