Gov. Dayton, MPD Chief React To Orlando Nightclub Shooting

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – In the wake of a shooting at an Orlando nightclub that left at least 50 people dead, prominent figures in Minnesota are offering their condolences to those affected.

Minneapolis Police Chief Janee Harteau released a statement about the tragedy.

"On behalf of the entire MPD, we are sending our thoughts and prayers to the victims of the shootings in Orlando," Harteau said.

In addition to the 50 people who were killed, at least 53 people were hospitalized.

"The MPD wants to reassure residents and visitors in our city that we remain vigilant and committed to ensuring people are safe at large scale events with significant crowds," Harteau said. "We stand with and protect all of our citizens in the fight against violence of any kind."

Gov. Mark Dayton ordered flags to be flown at half-staff until sunset Thursday to honor the victims.

"The horrific act of hatred and terror in Orlando was an unfathomable attack upon all of humanity," Dayton said in a statement. "Our hearts go out to the innocent victims of that heinous assault."

Sen. Amy Klobuchar also released a statement.

"This is a sad day for Orlando and a sad day for America. Innocent people were slaughtered by a man who was motivated by hate and terror and extremism. I stand with the LGBT community today, and my prayers are with the victims. We must root out terrorism abroad and at home.

Klobuchar spoke with WCCO Sunday morning.

"I can't even imagine what those families are going through right now, the families of the people killed, the victims that were hurt that are laying in the hospital," Klobuchar said. "This was an outrageous act."
