Man Who Shot Ex-Girlfriend & Father Sentenced To 27 Years

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – A man who pleaded guilty to attempting to murder his ex-girlfriend and shooting his father has been sentenced to over 27 years in prison.

Joshua Lee Gilpin was sentenced in Carver County Court Friday to 331 consecutive months after pleading guilty to attempted first degree murder and first degree assault. The sentence is the maximum allowed.

According to the Carver County Attorney's Office, in October 2015, Gilpin and his father drove to Gilpin's ex-girlfriend's home in Chaska to drop off Gilpin's 4-year-old son with the boy's mother.

Gilpin was upset, the attorney's office said, because his ex-girlfriend was dating another man. He brought a revolver to the home, which his father did not know about. Gilpin met his ex-girlfriend in the garage while Gilpin's father waited in the driveway.

Gilpin asked the woman whether she wanted him to kill her or her boyfriend first, according to the attorney's office. The woman called for help and Gilpin's father ran into the garage. Gilpin shot his ex-girlfriend through the back of her neck as she fled.

As Gilpin's father tried to take the gun from him, Gilpin shot his father in the chest at point blank range, the attorney's office said. After the shooting, Gilpin fled the scene and was later arrested in Jordan, Minnesota.

The woman and Gilpin's father both survived the shootings.

The 4-year-old child witnessed both shootings, the attorney's office said.
