Twins GM Terry Ryan May Have Known His Fate Weeks Ago

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- There is no question that this season, one currently in which the Minnesota Twins have the worst record in the American League, had taken a toll on Terry Ryan.

As Twins fans became restless with the team struggling, Ryan wanted to stay in his post. It turns out when we sat down with Terry Ryan two weeks ago, he may have already known he would not be back. All he told us was what we knew.

"When you get into the position I'm in and you're the final decision-maker you take things hard. If you're not doing well you take things very hard," Ryan said on July 1.

The inevitable was born out on the field and the fan base, while not holding Ryan solely responsible, something was not right.

"I feel that they overall have a good team. There are just some things that need to be changed a little bit and not necessarily the players," Twins fan Russel Newton said.

"I think he got us back on the right track with getting the young players in, getting them back on the right track," Twins fan Dave Firkus said.

On Monday at Target Field, there was an amateur game for inner city teams. It was the kind Terry Ryan would have loved: Grass roots, and with that, some sadness.

"You know you hate to see anybody lose their job so I wish Terry the best and of course I wish the Twins the best. That's my hometown team," Steve Winfield said.

And what is obvious this season is that Ryan still has a fire for the game. And he was not thinking about resigning his post.

"I love this job. This is a great thing. I've turned the page on yesterday," Ryan said.
