Wander Minnesota: Where To Beat The Heat

It sounds like we're in for a few days of intense heat and humidity. While there are people who really enjoy this weather there are plenty who don't.

For those who don't, or those who either don't have AC or lost power in Wednesday night's storms, there are some places to seek cool relief. This page lists some public cooling places and it also discusses ways to stay safe in the heat, if you're one of those inclined to be out in it.

Hit the movies.

There are plenty of family-friendly options out there and summer blockbusters too. Check out the schedule at the Riverview Theater, where not only can you avoid the heat you can get a bucket of the metro's best theater popcorn.

Visit your local library.

Both Hennepin County Libraries and Ramsey County Libraries have several locations that are open every day. Peace and quiet, coolness, bring your computer or tablet, or—gosh—read a book.

Jump in the pool.

If you're not staying in the adjacent hotel, plan to go early for this one: The Water Park of America will refresh you and your family considerably. There's a cap on how many people can be there at one time, with preference given to hotel guests, so try to arrive when it first opens to the public.

Hit up a museum.

There's something for everyone here: science at the Science Museum of Minnesota; kids' fun at the Minnesota Children's Museum; art at the Minneapolis Institute of the Arts, the Walker Art Center, and the Weisman Art Museum; history at Minnesota History Center and the Mill City Museum; Scandinavian culture and art (and great food) at the American Swedish Institute; and natural history at the Bell Museum of Natural History.

Take your friends and family bowling.

Bryant-Lake Bowl, Elsie's, and RanHam Bowling have plenty of open bowling hours to enjoy.

Or just cry uncle and go for some ice cream.
