Many Retailers Still Without Chip Credit Card Readers

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – By now, most credit card holders probably have at least one of the new chip credit cards.

But, not all stores are using the new technology.

The chip credit cards were introduced to help make shopping more secure. Each transaction creates a unique code, making them almost impossible to hack.

Despite plenty of notice, lots of merchants waited until an industry deadline of October 2015 to install the terminals. Now, there's a bottleneck as banks sign-off on each one.

New rules, announced last month, should start bringing terminals online faster.

However, even when the chip cards are working, many customers complain about the extra time it takes at checkout.
