Man Charged For Threatening To Blow Up Minneapolis Mosque

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A man is facing federal charges, accused of threatening to blow up an Islamic center in Minneapolis.

Daniel George Fisher, 57, is charged with one count of obstruction of persons in the free exercise of religious beliefs.

According to the criminal complaint, the Tawfiq Islamic Center received a handwritten note on Sept. 30, 2015 that threatened "to blow up your building with all you immigrants in it." The letter also included profanities, racial slurs and other derogatory comments about members of the center.

Prosecutors say FBI agents interviewed Fisher on June 14 of this year. Court documents say he told the agents he was upset the center had selected its new location for Minnehaha Avenue, and wanted them to build somewhere else. He also told investigators he'd become "increasingly angry with Muslims since 9/11," and confessed to writing the letter with the intent to scare members of the Tawfiq Islamic Center.

If convicted, Fisher could face fines and face up to one year in prison.
