FARGO, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota voters will decide next month on whether to legalize marijuana for medical purposes.

Measure 5 would allow qualifying patients to possess up to 3 ounces of medical marijuana for treatment of about a dozen medical conditions, such as cancer, AIDS, hepatitis C, ALS, glaucoma and epilepsy. The state Health Department would issue ID cards for patients and regulate state-licensed dispensaries.

Opponents of the measure say there are too many unanswered questions about appropriate dosages of marijuana and there aren’t enough safeguards in the 34-page proposal to make sure it is controlled. Supporters say it helps relieve chronic pain and helps lessen the side-effects of other treatments such as surgery, radiation and chemotherapy.

There are 25 states with comprehensive medical marijuana programs.

  1. Funny how the same people who made such big deal out of Cigarettes, are the same people pretending Marijuana is a miracle drug.

    Marijuana isn’t medicine — people use marijuana to get high for fun.

    1. Cannabis is a virtual miracle cure for many children with multiple seizure disorder that big pharmaceutical is completely unable to treat. We have seen case after case in the news where children having multiple seizures per day are reduced one or two seizures per month by consumption of high CBD cannabis extracts. And following that a trail of families forced to leave jobs and home behind and immigrate to California, Colorado and Washington so that they might treat their child’s illness without having to go to jail. All this insanity while cannabis is clearly safer than the legal alternatives. Alcohol, tobacco and pharmaceutical drugs kill over 650,000 Americans on average each and every year.

      Enough with the lies, just Legalize

      “Marijuana isn’t medicine — people use marijuana to get high for fun”
      Tell that to the people who’s children have used it to control their seizures, tell that to the people who use Cannabis instead of opiates to treat their pain, tell that to the state of Israel,tell that to the US government that grows Cannabis and provides MJ joints to a selct few.
      See BS indeed!

    my son has a seizure disorder that no medications will control he has tried 12 different anticonvuslant medications most with terrible side effects medical marijuana is his last chance to possible control this terrible disease that has left him developmentally behind and non verbal besides a seizure disorder please vote to pass this for all the people that traditional medications don’t work.

  3. wade says:

    I disagree marijuana is medicine, read the articles on all the kids in Colorado that their lives have changed and been saved because of this read the story on Charolete Figi and Zakia Jackson to just name a few both of these children wore having 50 seizures a day and are 99 percent seizure free thanks to medical marijuana, please do your research before making comments, they are using cbd which is impossible to get high from. THC makes you high. If you are fortunate to have a healthy child good for you, but don’t deny the people that really need this medicine. Also look up Jayden David on how it has changed his life. The medical marijuana is not smoked it is given in a liquid form. Medical marijuana can also be used for pain especially from cancer.

    CNN: In a report released through the “freedom of information” act the FDA reported to the DEA that marijuana is “not” a gateway drug. Also, the report said that marijuana was no more addictive than tobacco, but doesn’t seem to cause cancer. Dated August 2015.
    U.S. institute on Drug Abuse Report: Marijuana seems to perform a protective measure against lung cancer. THC…marijuana’s main ingredient is believed to kill aging cells that usually become cancerous. Dated 2010.

  5. When considering legalization ask which is safer, cannabis or the legal alternatives?

    US CDC Figures on numbers of deaths per year in the USA:

    * Prescription Drugs: 237,485 + 5,000 traffic fatalities
    * Tobacco: 390,323
    * Alcohol: 88,013 + 16,000 traffic fatalities
    * Cocaine: 4,906
    * Heroin: 3,365
    * Aspirin: 466
    * Acetaminophen (Tylenol): 179
    * Marijuana: 0, no fatal toxic overdoses and almost no traffic problems

    So, which is safer? Legalize cannabis NOW!!! Vote YES Nov 8

    So the socialist state of ND is going to attempt to legalize dope! Lots of luck with that one. And even if successful, you will likely see lots of regulations such as: no sales on Sundays, sales only through a few licensees who have made campaign contributions to the governor, no sales by corporates (only single owners), no sales to gay people, no sales after supper time, and requiring three kinds of ID to prove you are who you say you are. And, a prescription from your doctor who has admitting rights to a hospital within 100 yards of where you live. All drug stores now must be privately owned so not much of stretch to think there will be lots of gubmit red tape in the land of the repubs.

    1. Dan Mack says:

      Right on target. They should stick to using the alcohol our Socialist Welfare Village leaders and their cronies sell. If they really need a stronger medicine, then they should be buying the crack and heroin our Mexican cartel trade partners bring into the area by the boxcar from Mexico on our open borders and Sanctuary Cities programs.
