New Initiative Aims To Empower Young Minnesota Women

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Gov. Mark Dayton's Office and the Women's Foundation of Minnesota announced Tuesday a new initiative to help young women achieve their goals.

"It's the first of its kind in the nation," the governor said at a press conference. "The initiative is a public-private partnership and a multi-year, multi-million dollar investment to achieve equity and opportunities and to improve the lives of young women of color, American Indian young women, young women from greater Minnesota, LGBTQ youth and young women with disabilities."

The Young Women's Initiative of Minnesota will come up with an action plan by April of next year. There will be recommendations on how to improve opportunities for women and girls between the ages of 12 and 24.

There will also be a prosperity and well-being index to measure the progress over the next six years of this initiative.

The Women's Foundation of Minnesota is investing $8 million to get things started.
