Alternative Holiday Show, 'Nutcracker (Not So) Suite,' Returns To Cowles Center

The holiday season has arrived, and with it a whole new theater season.

From Theater Latte Da's historical "All Is Calm" to the Guthrie Theater's beloved "A Christmas Carol," there are several classic Christmas shows for audiences to enjoy.

But a new show is quickly becoming a Twin Cities staple for those audiences looking to add a little spice to their holiday repertoire.

On Friday, "Nutcracker (not so) Suite" returns to the stage at the Cowles Center for Dance & the Performing Arts.

For the second consecutive year, the James Sewell Ballet company will perform Myron Johnson's innovative take on the classic ballet.

The performance still tells the story of a young girl swept up by the magic of the holidays, but brings audiences to 1960s New York City instead of a Russian mansion. It begins with an over-the-top Broadway style number and sweeps audiences from the Upper East Side to downtown.

This year's performance includes a life-size Barbie doll and four "Naughty Nutcracker" shows, each featuring a different local celebrity.

The show opens Friday, Dec. 2 and runs through Dec. 18. Tickets cost $25 to $50. To learn more about the show, performance times or to purchase tickets, visit the Cowles Center online.
