Gophers 1 Of Several Volleyball Teams Making NCAA Tourney Runs

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – The University of Minnesota volleyball team advanced to the Final Four for the second straight season Saturday night, beating UCLA 3-0.

The Gophers beat the Bruins 25-23, 25-20 and 25-22 to advance to the National Semifinals this week on Columbus, Ohio. The Gophers will face Stanford on Thursday, with the winner advancing to play for the national championship.

The Gophers' quarterfinal win came as Concordia-Saint Paul beat Alaska Anchorage to capture its eight NCAA Division II women's volleyball national title since 2000. The Golden Bears swept the Seawolves 25-19, 25-12, 25-12 in Sioux Falls, SD, finishing the season ranked number one in the polls and going 35-2.  Concordia ended the year with 19 straight wins.

And that's not all in what many might soon be calling the State of Volleyball.  Northwestern of Roseville made it to the NCAA Division III women's volleyball Final Four last month, but lost in the semifinals to Calvin in Oshkosh, Wisc. Calvin went on to win the national title, while the Eagles set a school record for wins in a 34-5 season.
