Woman Escapes Golden Valley Fire, But Pets Perish

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A Golden Valley woman made it safely out of her burning home Sunday night, but her pets did not.

City fire officials say firefighters were called to the woman's home on the 1500 block of Orkla Drive just before 7:30 p.m. They found the home fully engulfed in flames and called other local fire departments for help.

The homeowner told fire officials that she woke up to the smell of smoke. While she did have smoke detectors in her house, they were not in working condition.

The woman's dog and two cats died in the fire, and her house sustained "serious, substantial damage," fire officials said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
