Rod Carew To Undergo Heart Surgery, Kidney Transplant

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Twins Hall of Famer Rod Carew is preparing to undergoing surgery to receive a new heart and a kidney transplant.

About 15 months ago, the former Twins first baseman suffered a heart attack that nearly killed him. Since then, the 71-year-old has had a machine keeping his heart going.

On Thursday morning, he went into receive a new heart. He'll also get a new kidney, which should improve his chances for a strong recovery.

Since suffering the near-fatal heart attack, Carew has been working with the American Heart Association to raise heart health awareness.
