Highway 5 Reopens After Serious Crash Near Waconia

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Crews have responded to a serious injury crash on Highway 5 near Waconia Friday morning that closed the stretch during rush hour.

According to reports from the scene, the road was closed between County Road 92 and Steiger Lake Lane.

Preliminary reports said that a nail spill on the road was responsible for the road closure. State Patrol later said that a 48-year-old man driving a Porsche was speeding when he rear ended a Chevy pickup truck. The truck was pushed into the ditch.

Robert Martinez, the 44-year-old driver of the truck, was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The Porsche driver, later identified as Paul Dufour of Plymouth, was transported to Hennepin County Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. State Patrol said Dufour was not wearing a seat belt.

The highway was reopened around 11:45 a.m.
