Goin' To The Lake: Waterville (Day 1)

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) --  Summer vacations are in full swing but your don't need to go far for your next getaway.

This week on our summer road trip, WCCO is staying somewhat close to home -- Amelia Santaniello and Angela Davis are Goin' To The Lake about an hour and a half south of the Twin Cities in Waterville.

Welcome to Waterville

Waterville is right in the heart of the southern lakes region. You'll find plenty of places to hop on the water and enjoy the lake. Tetonka Lake is the biggest at about 1,300 acres. It's connected to Sakatah Lake via the Cannon River. Both are great fishing lakes and of all the fish you catch, the most famous in this part of the state is the Bullhead.

After a long day on the lake, you just might be ready for sugar rush. The candy store inside Pastimes in Waterville will satisfy anyone's sweet tooth. The idea behind the corner candy store is to take you back when kids would pick their candy out of glass jars. You'll find all your favorites, from the 1920s to the 1960s.

Pastimes Vintage Boutique

At Pastimes in downtown Waterville, everything old is new again. Kate Wilson is the brains behind the shop.

"The town needed economic development, so we said 'Hey, there's all these talented people in the area -- let's rehab an historic building and let's open a cooperative for local artisans to come in and have their stuff,'" she said.

Pastimes opened two years ago with just 10 local artisans selling their goods. Now that number is up to 50. The shop is filled with unique finds that you can't get anywhere else, and Kate says business is booming.

Hot Summer Nights

Waterville is hosting its fun "Hot Summer Nights" event this week -- Amelia and Angela were there and got to enjoy everything this town has to offer.

The band Sidetracked set up on the sidewalk to keep everyone entertained while classic cars lined the streets for a trip back in time. Amelia and Angela even tried their best at the ice throwing contest -- for just a dollar you get three five-pound bags of ice. The goal was to get throw them as far as you could

Fishing On Sakatah Lake

The perfect summer day in Minnesota often involves a lake and a fishing pole -- no matter what you reel in. Amelia Santaniello and Angela Davis went to Waterville this week to see what would bite. So they got their fishing licenses, a couple of locals and a pontoon.
