Police: Standoff Situation Involving Armed Suspect Continues On 'U' Campus

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Since midnight Monday, University of Minnesota Police Minneapolis have been dealing with a suspect in a stand-off situation inside the Graduate Hotel on the University of Minnesota campus.

A University of Minnesota police officer told WCCO's Mary McGuire on scene that the suspect is armed, though police would not officially confirm that.

A campus alert went out this morning warning people that roads were closed due to a safety situation at the Graduate Hotel. Police said an armed suspect is inside a room there.

University of Minnesota Police Chief Matt Clark says the man in the room is from Arizona and has a felony warrant for a white collar crime for his arrest. The man refused to come out of the room, and officers say there is one other person in the room with him.

"Our goal is to make sure we have a peaceful resolution," Clark said. "What's great is, again, we have experience from a great number of agencies and professionals working the situation."

Police also say a SWAT team is in place. They've been talking with the person since around midnight, when someone called in a welfare check at the hotel.

Police say there are a couple of other people in the room where the suspect has the weapon. At 8:30 p.m., a woman was released from the room unharmed, according to the Minneapolis Police Department.

Police say there is no direct threat to the public
