Officials Respond To Another Fire At Homeless Encampment

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- The Minneapolis Fire Department says it responded to a fire at the Minneapolis homeless encampment Sunday.

Officials say the fire broke out around 12:15 p.m. at the Cedar Avenue camp.

The department said one tent caught fire and no one was injured.

Community members gathered Sunday to talk about the timeline for moving residents of the encampment to the new navigation center. That center sits on land owned by the Red Lake Nation.

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey says he is hopeful for a smooth transition, and he praised the nation for their help.

"I'm just proud to partner with our American Indian community," Mayor Frey said. "They've been phenomenal throughout and I think we can provide a recipe from which perhaps others can follow."

City officials hope to start moving people living at the camp as soon as this week.
