BLAINE, Minn. (WCCO) — A man who called police to report shooting and killing his wife has formally been charged with second-degree murder.
Forty-six-year-old Matthew Jansen was arrested Friday after police arrived to the 2700 block of 95th Avenue Northeast in Blaine to find his wife, Mary Jo, 46, dead inside their home.
Jansen told police his wife had recently requested a divorce, and was planning to permanently move out of their home the day of the shooting. While on scene, police say Jansen said “I can’t believe I did it” and “I guess I don’t have to worry about a divorce now.”
Upon further investigation, police found an unloaded .44 handgun on the steps of the home and two spent cartridges in the room Mary Jo was located in.
The Anoka County Medical Examiner ruled Mary Jo’s death as a homicide, citing gunshot wounds to the neck and chest.
The couple had been married for 23 years and have two children.
