Coronavirus Updates: Latest COVID-19 Headlines From May 2, 2020

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) —  The number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Minnesota surpassed 6,000 on Saturday.

Here are the latest headlines in the COVID-19 pandemic:

  • 10:04 p.m.: Muddy Water in Minneapolis closes indefinitely.
  • 8:26 p.m.: The MN House GOP says they will not pass a bonding bill while Gov. Walz's emergency powers are still in effect. This is possible because all the DFL holds the majority in the house, bonding bills require 81 votes to pass.
  • 7:02 p.m.: "We are in a good place. But we are still heading up the peak of this pandemic and now is not the time for sudden movements. We must take cautious, measured, steps forward. We need to slowly reopen society to slow the spread, not overwhelm our hospital system, and encourage herd immunity," the governor said in a release.
  • 2:08 p.m.: Wisconsin now reports 7,660 positive tests, 334 deaths.
  • 1:00 p.m.: Protesters at the Minnesota State Capitol call for end to Stay-at-Home Order.
  • 12:12 p.m: Staffing has become such a challenge at some Minnesota care facilities due to the coronavirus outbreak that a few aren't sure how they're going to get through the weekend, according to the Associated Press.
  • 11.a.m.: Minnesota's COVID-19 case count continued to increase on Saturday, with the Minnesota Department of Health reporting 498 more positive cases. Tragically, 24 more people lost their lives to the illness in the past 24 hours.
  • 10:22 a.m.: Crooners Supper Club is postponing its new Lakeside Drive-In Concert Series. It was announced on Wednesday and scheduled for next Friday, May 8. Three of the 11 concerts had already sold out and all were at least three-quarters sold. Organizers say they received notice that their plans were in violation of Gov. Tim Walz's stay-at-home order.
  • 6 a.m.: U.S. Steel has announced it will lay off 260 workers at its Minntac operation in Mountain Iron as the coronavirus pandemic has cut demand for steel.
