Tips & Tricks On Layering Your Look For Fall

By Nicole Crosbie

We all want to wear our summer clothes all year round but when fall comes we need to start dressing warmer. With fluctuating fall weather, wearing layers is essential and can be fashionable at the same time. By layering your look you can continue to wear your favorite summer wardrobe well into fall. Here are some tips and tricks to looking your best and ways to add layers without looking like you added pounds.

As temperatures get cooler, there's no need to pack away T-shirts, tank tops and summer dress. Throw on a fitted blazer or a dark jean jacket over your summer tops. Bright summer dresses with blazers over them were a prominent feature on the runway this fall.

Pair your sundresses with a scarf, tights and booties for a cool fall look. Keep from looking bulky and bigger than you actually are by wearing thin layers and choose breathable knit fabrics. When layering a heavier knit over a cotton top, choose simple accessories to achieve balance. There's nothing worse than wearing too many accessories and taking away from the beauty of your clothes.

Be conscious of proportions. If you're layering a belted chunky sweater over a T-shirt, choose a slim pant to balance out your look. Silk camisoles and blouses look great under suits for the office. Choose a ruffled blouse or a lace camisole for a pretty, feminine look. You also want to make sure you buy a suit jacket in solid colors that you can then mix and match with the rest of your wardrobe.

Next up are turtlenecks, they can be paired with suits for extra chilly fall days, but be sure to find a turtleneck that is a cotton/silk blend or cashmere. These lighter-weight blends will keep you from getting too hot and from looking too bulky. You can also layer a light sweater over a turtleneck. Pair a fitted turtleneck and belted trousers with a long, lightweight sweater. These don't have to be the tradition turtlenecks our mom's wore, think outside of box when you hear turtlenecks.
