Working adults who are looking for the best in studio arts that Minnesota has to offer need not look any further than the state’s land grant college. The university offers programs in painting, drawing, sculpture, ceramics, printmaking, photography and interdisciplinary art. Learn how to get started by attending a College of Continuing Education information session. Participants will hear a brief overview of options and then can attend a breakout session in their area of interest.

The college offers classes ranging from basic to advanced in technical competence. Classes take students beyond the technical and into advanced conceptual design skills. Also unique to MCAD are the many illustration and comic art specialties. Adults beginning or progressing in painting, drawing, printmaking, paper and furniture may discover an appropriate fine arts class.

Adults seeking a skill-building program complete with patience, praise and proper instruction may appreciate The Art Academy’s approach to education. Start with Traditional Drawing and Painting Techniques, a course that begins with the basics in a relaxed manner. Renaissance Drawing and Painting Techniques and Beyond is a more structured program that concentrates skills development in a positive environment. Students can choose from many workshops in drawing, painting, sculpture, origami and even comic and graphic novel art.

Adults specializing in pottery and ceramics are especially attracted to the Edina Art Center with the “Biggest Little Pottery Department in Minnesota.” Additionally, the center offers a wide range of instructional methods in most disciplines. One can contract for private lessons in drawing, painting, watercolor, photography or pottery. Member adults may also choose to participate in several open studio classes. A group meets on Tuesday for ink and brush painting, including watercolor. On Wednesday, a class meets for metal and jewelry, and on Friday, there is a class for pastel and oil.
