Best Places To Cut Down Your Own Christmas Tree In Minnesota

The Christmas season will be upon us before we know it, and with that comes planning for the holidays. This year, try something new and cut down your own Christmas tree. The entire family can share in the experience and cutting down a tree can help create memories and traditions for years to come. The following list can help you find some of the best you-cut farms within two hours of the Twin Cities area.

Guggisberg Tree Farm is located about two hours southwest of the Twin Cities in New Ulm and the family-owned farm has been offering you-cut and pre-cut trees to the Twin Cities community since 1995. The farm has several types of trees available including Balsam Fir, Fraser Fir, White Pines, Canaan Firs, Scotch Pines, Blue Spruces and Black Hills Spruces, according to the farm's website. The farm opens on November 25th each year and remains open until December 23rd. Customers can cut trees from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays and at other times by appointment. Saws will be provided to those who need them.

Hacker's Tree Farm & Nursery

Located about two hours southwest of the Twin Cities, Hacker's Tree Farm & Nursery provides a family-oriented atmosphere with several varieties of "choose and cut" Christmas trees. The family-owned company maintains four acres designed specifically for those who wish to cut down their own Christmas tree. In total, the farm grows nine types of trees to choose from including Norway Pine, Fraser Fir and Natural Balsam Fir. Hacker's Tree Farm opened in 1981 and the choose-and-cut portion of the farm was originally planted in 1987.

Hampton Hills Tree Farm offers three varieties of cut-your-own trees including Fraser Fir, Balsam Fir and Scotch Pine. In addition, the 140-acre farm provides free hayrides, visits with Santa and coloring books. The lot is open from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Coupons and advice about tree care are available on the company's website. The farm is located south of the Twin Cities near MN-52.

Thorn Crest Farm

Thorn Crest Farm is a community-supported agriculture group located in Dundas. The farm grows vegetables year round, but Christmastime at the farm is really special. Customers can cut trees from November 23rd to December 16th. Hours vary, and on Fridays the farm is open from noon to 4:30 p.m. On Saturday and Sunday, the farm is open from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., according to the farm's website. The pesticide-free farm has been open for more than 25 years.

Z's Trees is located west of the Twin Cities in Cologne and offers both pre-cut and cut-your-own tree options. Z's Trees will provide a handsaw for those who wish to cut their own trees, according to the company's website. The farm opens each year on the Friday following Thanksgiving and remains open until December 15th. With the exception of the Friday after Thanksgiving, the farm is open from 9 a.m. until dusk on Saturdays and Sundays only. Debit or credit cards are not accepted.
