They call these the salad days – those great early summer days when you can fill your table with both spring lettuces and all the baby vegetables which are getting going. You know who likes salad days? Everyone. Typically we use the expression today to mean the peak of a life, the very best time in someone’s life. Lauren Bacall’s salad days, for instance, would probably be her years with Humphrey Bogart. What did Bogey and Bacall eat during their salad days? That I don’t know, but I thought it would be fun this week to get into the big big celebrities’ favorite salads. Like what? Like these!
Judy Garland’s Vegetable Salad
Before she went over the rainbow, good old Judy Garland was Frances Gumm of Grand Rapids Minnesota, and like every good Minnesotan she knew her way around the bounty of the summer vegetable patch. Her favorite recipe, she told a cookbook writer in 1939, was basically vinaigrette on a lettuce-and-vegetable salad. Did she go on to feed this to Liza Minnelli? If you run into her, ask her for me!
Andrew Zimmern’s Brown Sugar Bacon Vinaigrette
When he’s not eating eyeballs on television, our hometown hero from Bizarre Foods is just a Minnesota dad. And like any Minnesota dad he’s got good ideas on how to get more bacon into his salad. If you feel like you’d eat more salad if there was bacon in it this is the recipe for you—and it’s good.
Domestic Goddess Gwynyth Paltrow’s Mexican Green Goddess Dressing
I read a thing in the Daily News today about how Gwynyth Paltrow can’t believe she’s the most hated celebrity in America. Of course she is surprised! Of course she is hated! No one that perfect can be loved. However, she has put out some good recipes in her time, and her Mexican spin on a Green Goddess dressing is extremely fantastic. Don’t hate her for it—hate her for being too rich and too thin. That’s how it’s done people!
Jackie Collins and Nancy Reagan’s Favorite Cobb Salad from the Brown Derby
All the Los Angeles power ladies of post-war America went to the Brown Derby for Cobb salads. I love a good Cobb salad! Just like Nancy Reagan and Jackie Collins did. If you want to be more like Jackie and Nancy, without the shoulder pads, make their Cobb salad. Also think about getting those shoulder pads too. It’s a look I think we’re ready for again.
The Caesar Salad of Clark Gable, Jean Harlow, Bruce Springsteen and Julia Child
A lot of legends swirl around the original Caesar salad, invented by Caesar Cardini at his Tijuana restaurant in 1924. Clark Gable and Jean Harlow were supposed to have loved it, and the Los Angeles restaurant Dan Tana claims to carry on the original recipe, which Bruce Springsteen now loves. How could one salad unite so many generations of American celebrities? You will have to make it and find out!
