Despite Win, Fans Still Chant 'Fire Childress'

By Reg Chapman, WCCO-TV

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Vikings fans were celebrating Sunday's win but many of them say the team did it despite the coach.

Five minutes before the end of the game, many Vikings fans were fed up and left.

"I love the Vikings and this is bologna. I can't take it anymore," said Justin Silverman, life-long Vikings fan.

Silverman is just one of many Vikings fans who blame the bad plays and losses on one man -- Brad Childress.

"I want the coach gone. I'm sick of Childress and I think maybe Favre should take the play book just make his own decisions. What is going on seriously? I'm losing hope, I'm losing hope," Silverman said.

Complaints about Childress were replaced with cheers and screams as the Vikings came back to win the game in overtime, beating the Arizona Cardinals.

"That was an amazing win by the Vikings, now fire Childress," said one agitated Vikings fan.

Fans are happy for the win but some say they have no confidence in the coach.

"I think he finally just did the right thing and got out of the way of Favre and let him run it," said Brian Zingler.

"Childress didn't win the game the players won the game, the players won the game," said Bob Kellogg.

Sign-toting Vikings fans let everyone know how they feel.

"We just won but Childress doesn't know how to listen to his players so hire me," said a fan holding a "Hire Me" sign.

"I think they're very poorly coached. I don't think they're ready. I think the head coach has lost the team and maybe there is a defensive coordinator that needs to take over," said Tom Johnson.

Others say today's victory proves Childress should be given more time

"I think he needs to still be given a chance. I think he kept the guys up and took them into halftime and came back with a W," said one excited fan.

"With this win he will be around for one more game nothing is going to happen, this is a momentum change that is what we need. Go Vikes," said a group of screaming fans.

"They won, so performance wins. A win is a win so they won. I think he bought some time at least right. If we turn it around here maybe we take the season back," said Clifton Ross.

Thousands of fans have an outlet on Facebook, to express their vote of no confidence in coach Childress. "Fire Chilly" is where many fans go to vent about the coach.

Many Vikings fans hope this victory is just the beginning of more to come.

Some says since Childress is being hounded by so many fans they hope keeping him on edge will produce more Vikings victories.
