Former La Crosse, Wis. Bishop Is Now A Cardinal

LA CROSSE, Wis. (AP) -- Former La Crosse Bishop Raymond Burke has been elevated to the title of cardinal.

The Richland Center native was one of 24 new cardinals created Saturday by Pope Benedict XVI in St. Peter's Basilica in Rome.

Burke now leads the Vatican's supreme court.

Some 150 cardinals from around the world came to Italy to welcome their newest members.

The 24 new cardinals include heads of Vatican congregations, archbishops of major cities in Europe, Africa, Asia and the Americas, and retired prelates honored for their lifelong service to the church.

Their numbers bring the College of Cardinals to 203.
