DeBlog: What About The Snow On Your Roof?

By Jason DeRusha, WCCO-TV

We've seen the video a million times, and we can't get enough of it. The snow on the roof of the Metrodome, causing it to collapse.

Here, watch it again.

But what about your roof?

Dave Altfillisch from Eden Prairie wrote in: "Curious to know (since we've had a LOT of snow). Is my home roof safe with all the added snow sitting on it? Do I need to have the snow removed?"

Obviously Dave's roof isn't made out of vinyl and supported by air, but I am curious to know how much weight a typical roof can support. And how much did all that snow weigh on Saturday? We'll check into that for tonight's Good Question.

Personally, I'm more worried about my deck. There's a load of snow on that thing -- how much can it support?

If you have pictures of snow on your roof or your deck -- go ahead and send them to me at my wcco.com e-mail.

And look forward to me standing live in front of someone's snow covered home while it's -3 degrees tonight at 10 p.m.! I have a really silly-looking hat I'm planning on wearing.
