Company Recalls 6,500 Bicycle Handlebar Stems

NEW YORK (AP) -- A unit of Quality Bicycle Products is voluntarily recalling approximately 6,500 bicycle handlebar stems because they can crack or break, which could lead riders to fall.

Salsa Cycles said Tuesday that it has received one report of a handlebar stem breaking, which resulted in minor injuries.

The recall, made in conjunction with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, includes all CroMoto S.U.L. 25.4 and 26.0 threadless handlebar stems and all CroMoto S.U.L. 26.0 quill handlebar stems sold as individual aftermarket units after April 1, 2010.

The black stems have the word "Salsa" painted on the extension and include a hash mark on the inside of the stem bar clamp area.

The product was sold for about $65 at bicycle retailers and web site from April through October 2010.

Consumers are advised to stop riding bicycles that have the stems and contact an authorized Salsa Bicycles dealer for a free inspection and handlebar stem replacement or a full refund.

They can also call Quality Bicycle Products toll free at 877-774-6208 or visit the Bloomington, Minn., company's website at www.salsacromotostem.com for more information.
